The Tiniest Key

On a spectacular spring day last week, I took a walk with my sweet friend, Drayton, along the High Line here in NYC. It was a magical day.

At some point, along that walk, I happened to look down and find a small key. I picked it up and stuck it in my wallet acknowledging that I'd had a dream about a key the night before.

Over the course of the last week or so, I'd spy that Lilliputian sized key in my wallet each time pondering what exactly it was for. What magic box it might open? It’s been a fun exercise of imagination.

Since then, it's been a week about keys...keys lost, keys found, and questions about what keys might open the stuck places in our hearts and minds.

I am a believer in seeing the world through magical eyes. I am a believer in wonder. I believe to live in this world and to find meaning in it, we need to cultivate a wide-eyed magical and wondrous viewpoint. From this perspective, we can then actually show up and make the difference we want to make. It takes courage to find beauty in this world especially when everything points to the contrary.

Max Ehrmann said “With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, the world is still a beautiful place.” I choose to believe that.

Rob Brezsny says: “Every day, we’re over-exposed to narratives that have been sucked free of delight and mystery. That's why we have to make such strenuous efforts to keep our world enchanted.” It’s true and it’s an important effort to make. One that has such delightful results.

So keep it up. You find what you look for. Look for magic and it’ll will reveal itself to you in unexpected and simple ways. I promise. It can work for you just like it did for me when magic revealed itself in the tiniest key found on a sidewalk on a magical spring day in the busiest city in the world.

A Hidden Door, Courage and A Crown of Jewels

This morning I read a quote by Joseph Campbell, "When you stumble, there lies your jewel.”
